There are a number of different rules to follow when shaping and cultivating your bonsai. The roots, for example, should radiate out from the trunk. As the trunk grows, it should taper off. The trunk should also lean a bit, and when viewing a bonsai, the pot should be arranged so that the trunk should lean towards the viewer. Likewise, the apex should also lean a bit towards the viewer. The branches should never cross each other and shouldn’t cross the trunk, either. The branches should begin about a third of the way up the tree, and they should be no thicker than about a third of the size of the trunk’s caliper
