I’m sure you’ve seen it before: the cracked, ragged and flimsy remnants of deck and fence posts that were not properly cared for and protected from wood’s number one enemy, water. These sorry casualties happen because water penetrates the upper exposed ends of the wood posts, and freezes, which expands and breaks up the wood fibers, which leads to a rapid deterioration of the entire post in a surprisingly short period of time. But the simple post cap presents a beautiful and economic way to protect your posts, and as such should really be considered an essential item, not merely a decorative afterthought.

Using copper post caps are another, more decorative way to protect posts on fences and decks and staircases. With beautiful lines and the wonderful color of copper melding into a rich patina, they serve the dual purpose of protecting post ends and making beautiful any fence or deck project.  If you are thinking of calling your fence or deck project finished before adding simple post caps or the more decorative copper post caps, think again. You’ll be glad you did in fifteen years or so.
